April 2008

Two years ago, someone got bit by a dog and started a lawsuit against us (Lake Superior Riders), Bell’s Point Campground and the dog owner.   We recently got a letter from the insurance company telling us the case was dismissed when it got to court.  We knew this would happen for many reasons, including the fact that the dog was tied up and the person had cut across the campsite.  What we didn’t anticipate was that this ridiculous suit would get as far as court.  Because it did, our insurance deductible now has to be paid which will cost the club thousands of dollars that we don’t have.  We are a non-profit organization and any money we made from the rally was donated to the local hospital fund.  We will now have to raise the money through fundraising and other activities.

We are all very sad and disheartened that such a worthwhile event could be taken out by one person looking for a quick buck. The club cannot afford to go through another lawsuit, and we cannot ask the volunteers to put their personal insurance at risk.  In today’s society, people seem to be quick to sue anyone and everyone.  We have learned the hard way that even when you’re right, it can cost you big time!
